Accessing Human Rights

India has one of the most sophisticated constitutions in the world, and one that provides strong guarantees to protect the rights of its citizens. As with many developing countries, the major problem lies in making these rights real for everyday people.

The main aim of Karuna's Human Rights programme is to create ways for citizens to use their voices to gain access to their rights, and to work collaboratively with government and other prominent people to fulfil their duties to the community.

Through a DFID-sponsored project we are creating a network of organisations, from village to national level, to improve democratic representation. Voices are being given to thousands of women and men steer their communities’ development, and to work collaboratively with the government in achieving their vision. Read more...

Right to Legal Protection

Our partner, Human Rights Law Network, has met strong resistance in its 20 year experience of addressing Dalit Rights. For example, atrocities against women are considered primarily a women’s rights issue, with no attention given to the caste status of the woman – yet the majority of atrocities are perpetrated against ‘lower’ caste women. Caste prejudice runs deep in Indian society, especially where the most prominent political and corporate positions are held by ‘higher’ castes. This project uses law suits and training of judiciary to raise awareness of Dalit issues and their rights. Read more...
