Project Funding

In 2008 Karuna funded 38 Indian, Nepalese and Tibetan Non-Governmental Organisations. These projects focus on providing access to education for people for the poorest, most marginalised sections of society. These include the Dalit (ex-untouchable) people of India and the tribal communities of the Indian Himalayas.

Our newsletter highlights Karuna's programme of work in the Himalayas, which benefits people living in remote, high altitude communities. Activities include the establishment of 89 supplementary schools providing education for 3,000 children. There are 30 Resource Centres complete with libraries, education material, computers and other training equipment. Trainers and committees were established in 60 villages to monitor services and liaise with local government to improve the quality of services. In addition, 1,200 women joined savings groups and received training for income-generating activities, such as crafts production and eco-tourism.

During 2008 Karuna secured funding to aid the expansion of activities of two long-term partners in India. Firstly, Saathi, a project based in Mumbai supporting runaway adolescent girls has been able to expand its outreach work. The other project to benefit is Bahujan Hitay Amaravati, which will be able to increase its activities for women and children in teh slums of Amaravati.

Karuna aims to form strong, long-term partnerships with our projects partners, as we believe that this is the most effective way of helping communities. For this reason we provide training and capacity building to our partner organisations.

On behalf of all our partners and beneficiaries, we offer our heartfelt thanks to all the individuals, charitable trusts and foundations that have supported us over the past year.
