Adult literacy classes

Older woman at her lessons

"I would like to say how happy and grateful I am to have the chance to learn. When I was a girl my parents didn't allow me to go to school because we were too poor. My life has been hard, but now after fifty years I have finally started to learn to read and write. It is hard to learn when you are old but doing something like this makes me feel good about my life again". Vachala Mohan Meshram

Woman happy with her new reading skills

Female education is seen to be pivotal for social change. Since women have by far the greatest influence upon the upbringing of children, their own education is of vital importance for future generations. Yet in South Asia, considerably more women than men remain illiterate.

Literacy classes also span cultural and religious divides as women come together to help and encourage each other.
