Himalayan Cultural Conservation
Pragya
Through an organisation called Pragya, Karuna funds work that targets education and the preservation of the indigenous Tibetan culture in five Himalayan states, reaching 50,000 people. The aim is to improve the quality and access to schools so that children can stay in their native villages and maintain contact with their culture. Tibetan language and dance classes, as well as crafts activities and museums help tribal people preserve their traditional way of life.
“People are happy that we are starting to teach young people Tibetan language again; that gives them a sense of self respect.” Thamed Lodve, teacher.
Crafts in the market place
As part of another initiative to preserve the traditions of the Himalayas, Karuna is bringing local crafts people and professional designers together. Modifying traditional designs for the modern market place creates viable sources of income while also preserving ancient skills.
