KARUNA 99
Introduction
Dear friends,
I am delighted to present the 1999 Karuna Report and to take this oppor-tunity to thank you for your continuing generosity.
Looking through this report I am struck once again by the challenges facing many of the people we work with. Many of them are having to overcome not just the effects of extreme poverty, but also the more subtle, insidious effects of their social background. For this reason one of the key aims of our Indian partners is to encourage a sense of dignity and self-reliance among the people running and benefiting from the projects.
I am also reminded of the courage and commitment of the men and women involved in running the projects. Many of them are themselves living and working in a difficult environment yet find the energy to help and support others, often as an expression of their Buddhist ideals. The projects aim to reach out to all members of poor communities, regardless of caste or beliefs.
Please read and enjoy this report. I hope that will give you a clear idea of the projects which Karuna has developed and supported in India. Above all I hope that it gives you some sense of connection with the people who are benefiting from your support.
with kind regards,
Dr William Stones, Chairman of The Karuna Trust
