Cultural Expression
“Our aim is to help people live happier, more fully human lives” Ashvaghosa worker.
Cultural expression plays a vital role in binding communities together and creating meaning in peoples lives, but, all too often, marginalized people such as Dalits and tribal people are denied access to cultural life.
Karuna helps people to develop and preserve a sense of cultural identity through:
- Ashvaghosa performing arts
training and performance in music, poetry, song and drama, especially around pressing social issues such as alcoholism, dowry injustices and infant death.
- Bushindo Karate Classes
an excellent training in confidence and self discipline. They also provide a very supportive context for children from different communities to mix.
- Tibetan school
The 200 students of the Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Cultural Institute are mostly from refugee Tibetan families. The school emphasises Tibetan language, music and dance, alongside a modern curriculum.
- Himalayan Cultural Conservation
Karuna funds work that targets education and the preservation of the indigenous Tibetan culture in five Himalayan states, reaching 50,000 people.
