Situated in the north of the state, Amravati is the fifth largest city in Maharashtra with a population of around 650,000.
This project puts education at the centre of their activities. A live-in hostel provides a home for 36 boys who are orphaned or from extremely poor families. Many of the boys can now use the internet which enabled them to gather information for school projects. Parents have started to visit the school and work with the teachers to support their children.
Activities include study support classes, theatre studies and leadership development and the Urgen Sangharakshita centre offers careers advice and guidance for people to become self-employed. Away from the hostel, women have also received vocational training. More than 20 Dalit slum-dwelling women have been awarded a diploma in sewing and many have begun to earn a decent living. The women’s achievements have had a ripple effect, raising the quality of life for their families.
