Kolhapur Hostel provides care, accommodation and educational support for young people from disadvantaged and impoverished families. Here most people are farm labourers, growing the local cash crop, sugar cane. Young people in these areas are extremely impoverished and are at risk of not attending school or of dropping out early. Their parents work long hours and children are often unsupervised or they have to work alongside parents to supplement the family income.
The majority - 70% - of the parents are illiterate and their children are the first generation in the family to go to school. Kolhapur hostel wardens work with local schools to provide study support and tuition so that students can achieve their educational potential.
As part of the project, parents attend workshops to raise their understanding of the importance of their sons’ education. Other workshops inform the parents about the damaging effects of addiction and domestic violence, so that they can help their children to move toward a better life and end the cycle of poverty.
