Livelihoods for Dalit Women in Chitwan

What are the challenges?

Rural Dalit and marginalized women in Nepal are rarely educated and find it difficult to ensure sustainable and dignified livelihoods. They also face caste and gender discrimination regularly. Violence against women is rampant in Nepal, consolidated in part by the fact that young women tend to be very isolated as they move to their in-law families after their wedding.

What is the aim of the project?

The project aims to improve the economic status of Dalit and other marginalized women, create economic empowerment, and strengthen women’s position in their families as decision-makers. The project encourages collaboration and networking among women, allowing them to set up small enterprises together and support one another if faced with poverty, discrimination, or abuse.

What are the main activities?

  • Providing training for market-oriented skills for economic empowerment of Dalit and marginalized women
  • Developing a training curriculum focusing on livelihood and gender equality
  • Facilitating group meetings for women Self-Help Groups (SHGs)
  • Providing training on gender equality and equal rights
  • Spreading awareness in the community on gender equality
  • Training on gender-friendly government plans and policies to increase the access of Dalit and other marginalized women to government schemes
