The Green Tara Foundation is helping to alleviate the suffering of women and adolescent girls in the slum districts of Pune by addressing the disadvantage and gender discrimination they face.
The project has provided community-based services, awareness raising programmes and advocacy for thousands of young girls from 10 slum districts. These programmes help to improve the girls’ health and boost their confidence and educational performance which in turn increases their ability to earn a living. So far there have been more than 7,000 attendances at 270 sessions in nine different districts.
Over the coming year the project will provide health awareness, vocational skills and IT training. It will also raise the girls’ awareness of their legal rights and show them how to protect themselves from domestic violence and physical harm.
