The Green Tara Foundation is helping to alleviate the suffering of women and adolescent girls in the slum districts of Pune by addressing the disadvantage and gender discrimination they face. In the slums where we work, the girls are often taken out of school and married off as soon as they hit puberty. As well as the dangers of pregnancy and childbirth in their teens, they are likely to be pressed into a life of confinement to the home and domestic servitude to their in-laws.
The current project is working to break this cycle by helping 1,000 girls from three slum districts stay in school and out of child marriage. This is being achieved through a holistic intervention which includes: the formation of girls groups for raising awareness of child rights, interventions with the parents and wider community, and the construction of toilets in the schools.
